Sixty percent of respondents to a recent Valvoline poll of ASE certified master technicians say a car's oil should be changed at 3,000 miles.
Twenty-nine percent say changing oil between 3,000 and 5,000 miles is fine. Nine percent of respondents say oil should be changed every 5,000 miles. Only 2% believe changing oil between 5,000 and 10,000 miles is acceptable.
The survey also asked techs to chime in on the preventative maintenance habits of vehicle owners.
"The vast majority of mechanics (87%) said they believe American car owners are putting off routine maintenance, mostly for cost reasons," say Valvoline officials.
