The three AutoZone Future Technician Scholarship winners for 2006 will share $10,000, courtesy of AutoZone Inc.
Competing in the SkillsUSA National Championship, the respective gold, silver and bronze medal contest winners were Scott Tonelli of Grafton High School in Grafton, Wis.; Jack Frederick of Wichita High School North in Wichita, Kan.; and Devan Fletcher of Mascenic Regional High School in New Ipswich, N.H.
The second annual AutoZone Future Technician Scholarship "was created to provide an incentive to high school students seeking post-secondary educations, help build automotive career option awareness, and infuse highly-qualified professionals into the workforce," says Bill Rhodes, CEO and president of AutoZone.
Competitors in the Automotive Service Technology contest were given the chance to showcase their skills at 11 different test stations. Testing was based on tasks outlined by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation.
The 11 workstations consisted of on-vehicle, simulator board and bench component testing. A comprehensive written exam followed the testing.
