'Be Tire Smart' over the holiday weekend, the RMA says

Aug. 28, 2002

The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) is urging motorists to check their tires before getting in their cars and driving to their Labor Day holiday destinations.

According to a public opinion study conducted by the RMA, only one in three drivers checks tire pressure before heading out on a long road trip with a fully loaded vehicle.

The RMA is recommending drivers:

* Check tire pressure once a month, and before every long trip.

* Don't overload the vehicle (check the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations for load requirements on the placard on the vehicle's doorpost or in the owner's manual).

* Check the condition of the tires' tread and sidewalls.
