Michelin Responds to Dealer's Anger Over Online Sales

Sept. 1, 2016

Michelin North America Inc. knew its pilot online tire sales program would not be embraced by all the dealers who sell Michelin, at least at first.

So when Steve Fortner, owner of Tire Country Inc. in Gastonia, N.C., sent Michelin executives an email explaining his concerns, they were quick to set up a meeting with him.

Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich, who talked with Fortner, ran the letter in his Aug. 26, 2016, blog, which can be read by clicking here. The negative comments that followed are self-explanatory.

Following the meeting with Fortner, Michelin sent a rebutal to the blog and the email penned by Chief Operating Officer Scott Clark, who wanted to "clarify a few important points" concerning the upcoming launch of the BFGoodrich tires online sales program in Charlotte, N.C.

To read his letter, check out Ulrich's latest blog, "Michelin: 'Online Tire Sales Can't Be Completed Without a Respected Local Service Partner.'"

What are your thoughts on the subject? Does Michelin address Fortner's concerns to your satisfaction? Is Fortner overreacting?
