March 9, 2004

The Michelin XZL military tire (size 11.00R20) has been selected by the U.S. Army for the military version of its new SmarTruck III multi-purpose vehicle, reports Michelin North America Inc.

The company also announced the BFGoodrich brand was chosen for the commercial version of the four-wheel drive vehicle (see related www.mtdealer.com item).

"Michelin North America is proud to expand our relationship as one of the U.S. Army's key military vehicle tire suppliers," said Jake Jordal, director of military business development for Michelin North America.

The new SmarTruck III, a true mobile command-and-control center, is designed to provide U.S. Army soldiers with the latest advances in technology to accomplish any mission, the company says. In military operations, it can detect and respond to personnel movements, bio threats or an incoming missile.

The Michelin XZL offers extra sidewall protection, an optimized tread design, and optimum traction and handling on varied terrains, including snow, sand, mud and highway, the company says.

Utilizing tubeless radial construction, the tires are currently used on the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck, (HEMTT), the Heavy Equipment Transport (HET), the Palletized Load System (PLS) for the United States Army and the Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) for the United States Marines.
