Continental Tire North America (CTNA) has received an $800,000 workforce training grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

The money will be used to train workers at the company's Mount Vernon, Ill., tire manufacturing facility and comes from the state's "Opportunity Returns" economic development strategy that is designed to spur economic development and create jobs.

CTNA has joined forces with Rend Lake College (RLC) for a training program that will provide specialized, plant-specific training for employees, certification-type classes and regular credit classes, reports the newspaper The Southern Illinoisan.

The grant will train all 2,070 Continental employees in a variety of areas including forklift operation, workplace safety and computer software training.
