Truck tire demand leads to ramp up in Danville

July 29, 2010

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and United Steelworkers Local 831 have reached a tentative agreement to return the Danville, Va., truck tire manufacturing plant to a 24/7 schedule.

Demand for truck and aviation tires necessitated the change, according to the company. The plant reduced weekly production from a seven-day to a five-day schedule in March 2009.

As part of the agreement, some 400 former workers will be recalled. According to the Danville Register & Bee, the workers lost their jobs through buyouts and layoffs that occured when the Danville plant transitioned to the three-shift, five-day schedule 16 months ago.

The plant has the capacity to produce 11,200 truck tires daily, according to the 2010 Modern Tire Dealer Facts Issue. The plant also manufactures aviation tires.
