Retreaders Continue to Hang Tough, Plan Big

April 7, 2020

It was shaping up to be an interesting year for retreaders well before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

The coronavirus outbreak and resulting economic fall-out have created extra layers of complexity – and uncertainty – that didn’t exist even eight weeks ago. But retreaders will find a way to survive and thrive. They always do.

In a way, that’s the theme of our special retreading section in the April issue of MTD.

The headline of MTD Senior Editor Ann Neal’s feature story, “Retreaders Feel Pressure on Many Fronts” speaks volumes.

In the article, retreaders from around the U.S. discuss their growth plans, as well as their take on the market. Tariffs, acquisitions, expansions and yes, COVID-19 – no subject is off the table.

Also, in the April edition of MTD, you’ll find our annual list of the Top 50 Retreaders in the U.S. This exhaustively researched piece is always an eye-opener. And we’re happy to make it available to you once again.

In addition, for the first time in many years, we interview the top retread executives from Bridgestone, Continental, Marangoni, Michelin and Vipal to get their take on the market. (Goodyear declined to participate.)

These interviews, which also will appear on www.moderntiredealer.com, were conducted pre-COVID-19. But they provide great insight into companies’ long-term strategies and general thinking.

And finally, our April issue’s retreading section includes some exclusive numbers that originally ran in the January 2020 MTD Facts Issue.

For instance, did you know that total retreaded truck tire sales in 2019 – sans casings – totaled $2.4 billion or that the average price of a retreaded truck tire last year was $165.90? It’s all there, including comparisons versus 2018.

We hope you enjoy our comprehensive look at the retread market.
