There are many tires used around the farm that are not specifically for ag field applications.

They include:

  • Skid steer tires are used on skid steers and some are used on implements. “Skid steers are used at dairies and feedlots,” says Dave Paulk, manager, field technical services, BKT USA Inc. “They are also used for heavy lifting, as they have many uses around the farm. 12-16.5’s the most popular, with 10-16.5’s used on smaller skid steers and 14-17.5’s used on the larger ones. There are multiple makes and tread designs in skid steer tires;”
  • Small OTR tires for loaders “are used in some farming operations, especially dairies and feedlots,” according to Paulk. “These are generally used from 17.5 to 29.5 and 20.5-25 is the most common size. They are made in both bis and radial. These are generally used in feed mixing operations;”
  • Flotation tires “are used on manure spreaders (dry and wet), fertilizer spreaders, and grain and silage carts. They are used on some large implements that need the load-carrying capacity that flotation tires offer. These are used on hay bailers and in grassland (seed) application. They range from a 16.5 to 30.5 wheel diameter sizes, with many sizes made;”
  • Hybrid tires such as the RIDEMAX IT 696 and AGRIMAX TURF RT 333 are used in orchards and around the farm, “where minimum traction is required. This tire has a blocky type of tread;”
  • ATV and UTV tires are used on some farms for light-duty work and are good for four wheelers and side-by- sides.” The W 207 is a popular tire for ATVs,” says Paulk;
  • Lawn and garden tires are used on some mowers and in grass and sod operations. “They don’t tear up the ground or grass as badly as a typical tractor tire. The LG 306 is a popular tire for this application;”
  • Industrial tires are used on some farms “on forklifts for heavy lifting. Forklifts are used for a variety of applications. The Power Trax HD (bias) and LM 63 (radial) are the most popular tires for this application;”
  • Telehandler tires are used in dairy and cattle operations for stacking and unstacking hay for feed, says Paulk. “The telehandler is a versatile machine that can be used for multiple things. The LIFT STAR PLUS is a popular tire for this operation.”

Paulk says Dealers “should be prepared to supply all of these tires to their customers, when needed. It’s impossible to stock all of these, but a dealer should have a reliable source for purchasing these tires at short notice with quick delivery. This will enable them to take good care of their customers and minimize any downtime. This also ties their customer to the dealer, as the customer can rely on the dealer when time is of the essence.
