Harvest Tire Pressure Checks: Ensuring Proper Inflation to Minimize Soil Compaction

It is extremely important to check tire pressure before starting any applications.

"Most equipment and implements – such as combines, grain carts or other harvest machines – are used only once a year, which can result in a gradual reduction in air pressure over time," says Dave Paulk, manager, field technical services, BKT USA Inc. "Also air pressure is affected by external factors, such as exposure to temperature extremes or sunlight.

"For these reasons, it is essential to consult the tire manufacturer’s air-pressure charts, which can guide operators in selecting the correct pressures according to the weights and loads.

"The benefits are multiple," says Paulk. "Indeed, correct inflation pressures result in a wider footprint, distributing the equipment's weight more evenly, thus minimizing soil compaction and improving traction, with advantages in fuel savings. On the contrary, overinflation increases ground pressure and compaction, while underinflation can cause tire failure over time, downtime, and additional costs."
