Tire Safety Week kicks off with collaboration

April 25, 2005

The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) has announced that it will work with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and several other groups to promote tire maintenance as National Tire Safety Week begins.

A RMA survey conducted two months ago found that only 15% of drivers properly check their tire pressure.

The survey also revealed:

* 29% of drivers "wrongly believe that the best time to check their tires is when they are warm after being driven at least a few miles;"

* two out of three drivers don't know how to tell if their tires are bald;

* 73% of drivers do not check their spare tire's psi level.

"Consumers need to be reminded about basic tire care practices," says RMA CEO and President Don Shea.

Groups working with the RMA and NHTSA include the AAA and the Governors Highway Safety Association.

Tire safety events are being held in Washington D.C. and Phoenix, Ariz., today as part of Tire Safety Week.

More than 12,000 tire stores will distribute RMA tire safety information this year, say RMA officials.
