Union proposes member for Goodyear's board

June 1, 2005

The United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union (USW) -- formerly the United Steelworkers of America -- has nominated Michael Wessel to serve on Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s board of directors.

Wessel is senior vice president of the Downey McGrath Group Inc., a public affairs consulting firm. He also is a member of the federal government's U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

"Mr. Wessel is a prominent and talented individual who is willing to serve and will do an outstanding job in this role," USW International President Leo Girard recently said in a letter to Goodyear Chairman and CEO Bob Keegan.

Goodyear gave the union a seat on its board as part of the parties' labor contract settlement in 2003.
