'Super union' to form next week

June 27, 2008

Top officials from the United Steelworkers (USW) and 3,500 union leaders from the tire, rubber, steel, paper, mining, oil and service industries will meet in Las Vegas next week to create "the first global union," say USW officials.

The formal signing of the agreement creating the first global union with Derek Simpson, general secretary of the United Kingdom-based international union Unite the Union (Amicus Section) will be held on July 2.

"The name and structure of the new global union will be announced to USW convention delegates."

The union will have a combined total membership of more than 3 million active and retired workers from the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Ireland.

Further information concerning the global union will be available after the agreement is signed on the USW's Web site, www.usw.org.
