May 12, 2011

Continental Tire the Americas LLC has announced it will be investing $224 million to expand its Mount Vernon, Ill., plant.

The expansion will increase capacity at the plant by almost 4 million passenger and light truck tires. The company plans to add 444 employees.

The Mount Vernon plant currently has the capacity to produce 27,700 consumer tires per day, according to Continental.

Continental reports increased demand for Continental and General brand tires in North and South America is the driving force behind the investment.

The company will spend $171 million on new machinery and equipment, and $53 million on buildings and what it terms “infrastructure.”
