M&A Activity Continues in Canada

June 12, 2023

Kal Tire’s acquisition of Frisby Tire is the latest in a string of buyouts and mergers that have taken place in Canada.

Kal Tire, which is based in Vernon, British Columbia, added five retail and commercial outlets, plus a wholesale business, when it recently purchased Ottawa, Ontario-based Frisby Tire, which at 103 years old, was considered to be the oldest, independently owned tire dealership in Canada.

The deal now gives Kal Tire more than 260 locations.

Kal Tire officials say Ottawa-area consumers "will notice the newly branded Kal Tire signage in the coming weeks and can visit any location for new tires and wheels, changeovers and repairs, tire storage, purchase financing and more.

Two months ago, Distribution Stox, which is headquartered in Quebec, announced it will acquire Edmonton, Alberta-based North Country Tire Distributors, which has warehouses in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.

The transaction is expected to close during the second quarter of 2023.

"Already collaborating with North Country Tire Distributors for the past years, we share complementary business ambitions and similar values," said Distribution Stox officials when the acquisition was announced.

"Strengthened by our current coverage in Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, this new partnership allows us to affirm our national footprint as a tire distributor and positions us well to expand our banner network across the country."

“I’m thrilled by what this represents for our valued customers," said Jared Powell-Williams, vice president of North Country Tire Distributors.

"The national footprint creates a unified vision for customer experience coast to coast and a viable alternative for all of our mutual partner."

North Country Tire Distributors opened a distribution center in Winnipeg, Manitoba, last summer.

Another quickly growing company is Groupe Touchette, which finalized its purchase of American Tire Distributors Inc.’s (ATD) Canadian subsidiary, National Tire Distributors, in September 2022.

The combined Groupe Touchette/NTD business is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, with a main support center in Burlington, Ontario, plus regional offices throughout Canada.

As part of the deal, ATD supplies its Hercules and Ironman brand tires to Groupe Touchette/NTD.
