Auto service survey breaks down service shops

June 2, 2010

The average and median number of service bays per independent tire dealership is five, according to the 2009-2010 Modern Tire Dealer Automotive Service Survey. In total, independent dealers perform more than $17 billion in annual service work in 145,000 bays.

Dealers responding to our survey operate between one bay (7.4%) and 15 or more bays (1.1%) per outlet.. The majority of dealers -- 67% -- have between 4-7 service bays per outlet.

The MTD Automotive Service Survey also breaks down the various service segments so that you have a benchmark to which you can compare your own dealership's performance.

It covers everything from air conditioning service to suspension work. We already have addressed engine diagnostics, exhaust service, brake service, battery/electrical service, air conditioning, chassis/suspension, shocks/struts, cooling system and oil and lubrication service on our Web site, www.moderntiredealer.com, and in our bi-weekly "Auto Service News & Best Practices" e-newsletters.
