It takes one tech to screw in a light bulb, but...

How many techs does it take to work in an independent tire dealership? According to the 2009-2010 Modern Tire Dealer Automotive Service Survey, the answer is five.

Independent dealers performed more than $17 billion in annual service work last year. And it took 145,000 technicians to perform that work, based on dealers responding to our survey. Would you be surprised to know that 10% of all outlets employ at least 10 techs?

The MTD Automotive Service Survey also breaks down service bay usage so that you have a benchmark to which you can compare your own dealership's performance.

It covers everything from the average number of bays at a dealership to what services are being perfomed in those bays. We already have addressed engine diagnostics, exhaust service, brake service, battery/electrical service, air conditioning, chassis/suspension, shocks/struts, cooling system and oil and lubrication service on our Web site, www.moderntiredealer.com, and in our bi-weekly "Auto Service News & Best Practices" e-newsletters.
