Why President Obama is wrong about his tariffs

Jan. 26, 2012

Don't believe everything you hear by candidates on the campaign trail. Case in point: what President Barack Obama said during his recent State of the Union Address.

Whether or not you consider the address part of the campaign trail, the president said more than 1,000 jobs were created as a result of the tire tariffs he applied to consumer tire imports from China in 2009. That is not true.

"Wall Street Journal" business writer John Bussey directly addressed the issue in his Jan. 20, 2012, story, "The U.S. tries playing hard ball -- and whiffs." But that was four days before the president spoke.

Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich addresses the issue post-address in his latest blog. To read what the president said -- and why, at the very least, he is midguided, click on "Tire tariffs did not equal jobs, despite what President Obama said."
